Biography

Dr. Uyar obtained his Ph.D. degree from North Carolina State University (Raleigh, NC, USA), College of Textiles, Fiber & Polymer Science in September 2005. Currently, Dr. Uyar is an Associate Professor at the Department of Fiber Science & Apparel Design, College of Human Ecology, Cornell University. Previously, Dr. Uyar was appointed as an Associate Professor at the Institute of Materials Science & Nanotechnology (UNAM) of Bilkent University (Ankara, Turkey) from 2014-2018 and Assistant Professor from 2009-2014. Previously, Dr. Uyar was appointed as an Assistant Professor at Interdisciplinary Nanoscience Center (iNANO) at Aarhus University (Denmark) (2007-2008). He carried out his postdoctoral studies at iNANO (2006-2007) and Macromolecular Sci. & Eng., Case Western Reserve University (Cleveland, OH, USA) (2005-2006). Dr. Uyar has also worked as a Ph.D. summer intern (summer of 2002, 2003, and 2004) at BabyCare R&D at Procter & Gamble (P&G) Company (Cincinnati, OH, USA) where he gained industrial research experience. He has completed two Master's programs; Materials Sci & Eng at the University of Cincinnati (OH, USA) (2002) and Chemistry at Middle East Technical University (METU) (2000), Turkey. He received his BS degrees in Chemistry Education double major with Chemistry at METU (1998) with honors.

Prof. Uyar is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC). Prof. Uyar is the recipient of several prestigious awards/fellowships, given only under 40 years of age, including • 2016 International Cyclodextrin Jozsef Szejtli Award • 2014 TUBITAK Incentive Award (the most prestigious award in Turkey, given by TUBITAK-Scientific & Technical Research Council of Turkey)• 2012 Fiber Society Distinguished Achievement Award • 2012 Turkish Academy of Sciences Outstanding Young Scientists Award (TUBA-GEBIP) • 2010 METU Prof. Dr. Mustafa Parlar Foundation Research Incentive Award • 2010 EU, FP7, Marie Curie International Reintegration Grant (IRG) Fellowship • 2009 Outstanding Young Scientist Award by Feyzi Akkaya Science Foundation (FABED)

Prof. Uyar is the director of NanoFibTex - NanoFibers & NanoTextiles Laboratory at the Department of Fiber Science & Apparel Design, at Cornell University. 

Uyar Research Group have main research interests in Nanofibers and NanoTextiles with novel functionalities for applications in:

NanoTextiles (protective textiles, medical textiles, multi-functional textile materials),

Environmental/Filtration (molecular filters, water purification, waste treatment, heavy metals removal, air filtration, VOCs removal),

Healthcare (drug delivery systems, wound dressing),

Catalysis (photocatalysis for water treatment, flexible nanofibrous heterogeneous catalysts systems),

Sensors (flexible and reusable nanofibrous sensors for detection of pollutants in water,  biosensors),

Food and Food Packaging (active food packaging, nanofood, delivery and stabilization of food additives; essential oils, antioxidants, antibacterials, etc.),

NanoAgriculture (nano fertilizers, seed/plant protection, controlled delivery of pesticides),

Nanocomposites (high performance and functional nanofibrous composite materials)
