Erin Green., Ph.D, R.D., Community Nutrition Coordinator for the Cornell Dietetic Internship and Lecturer in the Division of Nutritional Sciences at Cornell University, has been recognized by the Nutrition and Dietetic Educators and Preceptors (NDEP) as an Outstanding Dietetic Educator award winner for the North East. The Outstanding Dietetics Educator Award program recognizes the teaching, mentoring, and leadership activities of faculty in ACEND^®-accredited dietetics education programs.

Erin was nominated by the New York State Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (NYSAND and the Southern Tier Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (STAND), not only for her work within the Cornell Dietetics program, but for her role as the current president for STAND, a group committed to leading the future of the dietetics profession and its members while serving the public through the promotion of optimal nutrition and well-being. In 2020 Erin was recognized by NYSAND with the Recognized Young Dietitian of the Year award.

Erin came to Cornell University as a graduate student in the Division of Nutritional Sciences, where she served as the graduate teaching assistant for two required dietetics courses, working with not only students but professional staff. In 2017 she was selected as a Graduate Research and Teaching Fellow (GRTF) through the Center for Teaching Innovation at Cornell. Erin’s distinction as a GRTF illustrated her abilities and interest in teaching and her desire to expand her teaching skills in preparation for her current career in education. As Erin was completing her doctoral studies in 2018, a position in the Dietetics program at Cornell as an instructor became available and Erin proved to be the perfect candidate for the role. She is the sole instructor of NS 2470: Food for Contemporary Living, a lab course that teaches, among other things, positive nutritional practices and health promotion goals. In this course, Erin carries out the important instruction of dietetics students on how to prepare food that is safe to eat, nourishing and aesthetically appealing while also meeting cultural and individual needs and preferences. As Community Nutrition Coordinator in the Dietetic Internship, Erin works with regional community practitioners to plan, coordinate and carry out comprehensive community rotations for the program’s 10 dietetic interns. At a time when internship programs are struggling to find health care providers willing to teach students in their practice setting, Erin has effectively grown the program’s community preceptor pool by 30%.

Erin’s expertise and deep understanding of community nutrition partner with her effective leadership skills, work ethic and her patience to make her a valuable part of the Dietetics program at Cornell University and in the community, which is what the Outstanding Dietetic Educator award recognizes.
