The College of Human Ecology is launching a faculty cohort hire to advance scholarship and practice addressing social justice, centering it as a critical area of expertise and strength throughout the college. This initiative is part of a comprehensive and collaborative college-wide effort to bring together a cohort of scholars who are committed to studying race, ethnicity, and culture, including the nature, persistence, and consequences of inequality.

The Department of Fiber Science & Apparel Design seeks applicants for an open-rank tenure track faculty position focused on racial and social justice issues in the fashion, apparel and textile industries. 

Position Summary

Cornell University’s Department of Fiber Science & Apparel Design (FSAD) in the College of Human Ecology (CHE) invites applications for an open rank tenure track faculty member.  The Department consists of a multidisciplinary faculty spanning fashion design, anthropology, anthropometrics, chemistry, materials engineering, textile science, and business.  The Department offers a wide range of programs at all degree levels.  FSAD currently offers undergraduate degrees in Fashion Design and Management and in Fiber Science, M.A. and Ph.D. in Apparel Design and M.S. and Ph.D. in Fiber Science. An M.A. in Fashion Studies has been approved, but has not yet been launched.  The Department has strong ties with schools and departments across Cornell, and faculty collaborate with other fields including Anthropology, Art History, Architecture Art and Planning, Industrial and Labor Relations (ILR), Materials Science and Engineering, Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Human Development, Computer Science and other disciplines.  The Department faculty are also members of multidisciplinary centers and institutes across campus including the Cornell Center for Materials Research (CCMR) and the Atkinson Center for a Sustainable Future.   The department is uniquely situated in a land grant and Ivy League university and attracts outstanding students capable of excellence in both STEM and design areas.

The successful candidate will conduct scholarly research at the intersection of equity, inclusion and social justice as they relate to industry issues. Topics may include impacts of diverse perspectives or lack of diverse perspectives, cultural appropriation, discrimination and representation in the industry including areas of fashion design, employment/human resources, supply chain, retail environment, working conditions/labor, media and marketing. Focus on under-represented groups in the fashion, apparel and textile industries via supply chain, production, economics, consumer behavior and design may inform research.  Teaching in the area of fashion design management based on department needs, including developing new courses in areas such as consumer behavior, product development, trend analysis, marketing/communications. The appointment will be 50% research /50% teaching in areas highlighted above.


An earned doctorate in any relevant field.  Industry experience a plus.
