BUILDING TOGETHER

Building Together was an exhibition of research conducted by students in the departments of Design & Environmental Analysis, Architecture, and Landscape Architecture. The project studied community engagement through participatory modes of making. On display were a series of open-ended public structures which invite play and collaboration through an intuitive syntax of elements when combined in multiple ways.

The exhibition was part of NYCxDESIGN’s Design Days, an annual exhibition of design throughout the New York City area crossing multiple design disciplines which span industry, practice and research.

LUMINANCE

The luminaires were designed and built by students in DEA 2750, an introductory lighting studio for students across campus. Each luminaire was an exploration of both light qualities and material expressions, which began with the selection of a quotation from literature. The selection established the conceptual direction for each student’s light fixture; then through multiple iterations, the students explored, exposed and enhanced specific lighting effects that were then manipulated through material selections.

Faculty Exhibition: John (Jack) Elliot

Works from Professor Elliot in the Jill Stuart Gallery: Coetus Ungula, Collus Major and Torso Salix

“Megaligna” or “Giant Wood” is an exhibition of new sculptural works by Professor Jack Elliott. This show featured large sculpted tree forms disciplined through simple planar cuts. Continuing with the theme of balance and the human/nature relationship, these new pieces reference ideas of the body as well as those of the mind, of singularity and plurality. The composition/arrangement of the pieces changed over the course of the exhibition, to explore the variety of expressions available through these simple gestures.
