Bernie, you are an admired and respected graduate of the program. and also a distinguished member of the healthcare industry. 0:01:13.420,0:01:16.780 it is a privilege to have this opportunity 0:01:16.780,0:01:19.280 to recognize your many accomplishments 0:01:19.280,0:01:22.060 and to express our gratitude for your years and your service 0:01:22.420,0:01:26.900 to Sloan, its students, and fellow alumni. Congratulations. 0:01:27.460,0:01:35.390 thank you very much Aaron. I am 0:01:35.390,0:01:39.020 genuinely humbled and honored. I could 0:01:39.020,0:01:42.860 think of so many alums either who 0:01:42.860,0:01:45.410 preceded me or graduated subsequent to 0:01:45.410,0:01:48.170 my graduation who in my view would be far 0:01:48.170,0:01:50.990 more qualified to receive this 0:01:50.990,0:01:54.050 acknowledgement so it affects me deeply 0:01:54.050,0:01:57.410 and I'm honored and proud to be the 0:01:57.410,0:02:00.610 first recipient of this award 0:02:00.610,0:02:02.610 We couldn't think of anyone more deserving. 0:02:02.610,0:02:04.880 Can you tell us a little bit, what inspired you to start 0:02:05.080,0:02:07.820 your career in the healthcare industry? 0:02:08.040,0:02:10.780 that was largely a family decision my 0:02:10.790,0:02:13.100 my father was a was a surgeon 0:02:13.100,0:02:16.400 and at a very tender age I would 0:02:16.400,0:02:18.590 accompany him when he made his rounds at 0:02:18.590,0:02:20.540 the hospital and then he would often 0:02:20.540,0:02:23.420 take me to see his post-op patients when 0:02:23.420,0:02:25.910 he made house calls. my father was a 0:02:25.910,0:02:28.070 throwback and believed in making house 0:02:28.070,0:02:32.930 calls back then and I went along. I'm not 0:02:32.930,0:02:35.660 going to say lovingly but I went along. was 0:02:35.660,0:02:38.090 eager to just see the interaction 0:02:38.090,0:02:41.020 between my father and his patients and 0:02:41.020,0:02:44.600 quite candidly um that was a factor in 0:02:44.600,0:02:46.970 my decision to go into healthcare. my 0:02:46.970,0:02:48.860 early thought was to perhaps be a 0:02:48.860,0:02:52.540 physician and then I spent one summer 0:02:52.540,0:02:55.180 when i was still an undergraduate i'm 0:02:55.180,0:02:58.850 working in a hospital and realized then 0:02:58.850,0:03:02.870 that my interest really lay more in the 0:03:02.870,0:03:05.209 administrative side and less in the 0:03:05.209,0:03:08.360 clinical side and then having made that 0:03:08.360,0:03:11.840 decision the process with led me to 0:03:11.840,0:03:14.780 do to Sloan was that it was an obvious one 0:03:14.780,0:03:17.870 to me. I wanted one that offered a a more 0:03:17.870,0:03:20.900 meaningful academic experience not just 0:03:20.900,0:03:24.560 one a year. it also was housed in a 0:03:24.560,0:03:27.350 university whose resources were 0:03:27.350,0:03:30.230 extensive and expansive and I think the 0:03:30.230,0:03:32.600 Cornell program offered met those 0:03:32.600,0:03:37.010 requirements in spades on both scores so 0:03:37.010,0:03:41.080 it's a very worthwhile move on my part 0:03:41.080,0:03:44.160 You talk of all these moments you remember 0:03:44.380,0:03:47.040 with your father, growing up, and getting into healthcare 0:03:47.240,0:03:49.940 and the value of Sloan. And as you think about 0:03:50.120,0:03:52.280 about those seminal moments, post Sloan, 0:03:52.460,0:03:55.200 those transformative times, what are some of the things that stand out to you 0:03:55.380,0:03:58.640 that let to the career that you had, so distinguised. 0:04:00.400,0:04:03.800 well the model that inspired me was 0:04:03.810,0:04:06.780 was my dad and he only have being a 0:04:06.780,0:04:09.299 typical general surgeon he only had one 0:04:09.299,0:04:10.950 way of doing things and that was 0:04:10.950,0:04:14.459 obviously either his way or or no other 0:04:14.459,0:04:16.889 way. in his way invariably was the right 0:04:16.889,0:04:19.729 way and the right way in his view was 0:04:19.729,0:04:23.759 both the ethical way the moral 0:04:23.759,0:04:26.520 way and the right way for the patients 0:04:26.520,0:04:29.970 involved. so I think if I had a singular 0:04:29.970,0:04:33.240 moment, It would be hard to carve out but if I had 0:04:33.240,0:04:36.389 a singular moment it was when I moved to 0:04:36.389,0:04:39.030 Connecticut and set about the task of 0:04:39.030,0:04:41.370 opening up my first freestanding 0:04:41.370,0:04:44.220 ambulatory surgery center and that was back 0:04:44.220,0:04:45.840 in the days when there were no 0:04:45.840,0:04:49.259 regulations, no licensing requirements, no 0:04:49.259,0:04:52.770 accreditation but I knew from my 0:04:52.770,0:04:56.520 background, and I knew based on things 0:04:56.520,0:04:58.740 that were important to me that there was 0:04:58.740,0:05:00.900 only one correct way to set up the first 0:05:00.900,0:05:04.050 facility in the State of Connecticut and 0:05:04.050,0:05:07.860 that was to be above reproach so 0:05:07.860,0:05:08.789 that even though there were no 0:05:08.789,0:05:12.449 regulations even if there had been we 0:05:12.449,0:05:14.449 would be able to meet and surpass any 0:05:14.449,0:05:16.320 requirements that anybody would impose 0:05:16.320,0:05:20.039 on us and that model has stayed 0:05:20.039,0:05:22.680 with me throughout my career and as I 0:05:22.680,0:05:24.690 began to open up surgical centers across 0:05:24.690,0:05:27.690 the country and frankly even in China 0:05:27.690,0:05:30.000 where I had an opportunity to do some work 0:05:30.000,0:05:33.120 that was still the pervasive mindset 0:05:33.120,0:05:36.000 that drove me to behave the way 0:05:36.000,0:05:38.490 I've always behaved when doing business. 0:05:38.490,0:05:41.849 I wanted to be able to not just make a 0:05:41.849,0:05:44.690 mark but really affect people's lives 0:05:44.690,0:05:47.190 qualitatively as well as quantitatively 0:05:47.190,0:05:50.729 and being able to reach out and set the 0:05:50.729,0:05:52.800 standard for care where there had been 0:05:52.800,0:05:55.529 no previous standards was both a 0:05:55.529,0:05:56.419 wonderful opportunity. 0:05:56.419,0:05:59.040 it was an opportunity and I viewed it as 0:05:59.040,0:06:02.250 a responsibility at the same time as the 0:06:02.250,0:06:05.130 very early pioneers in that field to be 0:06:05.130,0:06:06.960 able to demonstrate the value and the 0:06:06.960,0:06:10.470 worth of this new modality one 0:06:10.470,0:06:12.300 that I think has stood the industry in 0:06:12.300,0:06:14.300 very good stead. 0:06:14.520,0:06:17.400 Clearly, in this post-reform era, it has been 0:06:17.400,0:06:20.120 it has been a staple for healthcare going forward. 0:06:20.260,0:06:22.820 and it is amazing to think that what you did 0:06:22.920,0:06:27.420 years ago and how it has impacted healtcare today. Congratulations. 0:06:27.420,0:06:29.420 Thank you very much. 0:06:29.600,0:06:32.880 So if you think about... we've current students 0:06:32.880,0:06:36.400 that are sitting out there, getting ready to enter the industry 0:06:36.540,0:06:39.020 what would you say to them? 0:06:39.300,0:06:41.600 I continue to believe strongly in 0:06:41.610,0:06:45.690 healthcare. it is a wonderful and exciting field 0:06:45.690,0:06:48.870 loaded with opportunities. opportunities 0:06:48.870,0:06:51.320 not not just in traditional employment 0:06:51.320,0:06:54.990 but to strike out and pursue new 0:06:54.990,0:06:58.440 ventures what with gene splicing and all 0:06:58.440,0:07:01.680 kinds of other approaches; genomics and a 0:07:01.680,0:07:04.380 variety of opportunities to carve out 0:07:04.380,0:07:06.539 new administrative and business 0:07:06.539,0:07:09.750 opportunities. I think it's a wonderful 0:07:09.750,0:07:12.389 field to pursue and I would 0:07:12.389,0:07:15.599 encourage any young person who wanted to 0:07:15.599,0:07:17.340 feel ... who is not afraid of hard work 0:07:17.340,0:07:19.830 and wanted to pursue something that 0:07:19.830,0:07:22.289 would have the ability to make them feel 0:07:22.289,0:07:24.990 genuinely good, i would encourage them 0:07:24.990,0:07:28.650 all to as much as possible strengthen 0:07:28.650,0:07:31.560 their communication skills both verbally 0:07:31.560,0:07:33.900 and in writing but I think in any field 0:07:33.900,0:07:36.479 of endeavor, the ability to 0:07:36.479,0:07:39.750 communicate effectively is critical to 0:07:39.750,0:07:42.570 any success and I think having the 0:07:42.570,0:07:44.520 opportunity to use those skills to 0:07:44.520,0:07:48.120 inspire people inspire the clinicians 0:07:48.120,0:07:50.750 you work with inspire board members and 0:07:50.750,0:07:53.099 I think a lot of attention in the future 0:07:53.099,0:07:55.530 needs to be paid on dealing with board 0:07:55.530,0:07:57.870 members of health care facilities not 0:07:57.870,0:08:00.150 just because of transparency but the 0:08:00.150,0:08:02.130 boards bear the responsibility for 0:08:02.130,0:08:05.219 setting the vision and seeing to it that 0:08:05.219,0:08:07.800 there was appropriate execution so I 0:08:07.800,0:08:09.570 think the responsibility is doubly on 0:08:09.570,0:08:10.169 their shoulder 0:08:10.169,0:08:12.509 and I think they have to remember that 0:08:12.509,0:08:15.240 they're running a specialized endeavor 0:08:15.240,0:08:16.979 not just their typical business that they 0:08:16.979,0:08:19.919 may have left behind. this is a unique 0:08:19.919,0:08:22.379 opportunity to be special about what 0:08:22.379,0:08:24.389 you're doing and to look forward with 0:08:24.389,0:08:27.400 great pride in what you've accomplished 0:08:27.400,0:08:30.480 and I think not a lot of people view it that way. 0:08:32.500,0:08:37.400 Interesting. As you think about lessons. you talk about lessons that you've 0:08:37.520,0:08:42.340 probably learned throughout the years. Are there things that you want to say to them 0:08:42.340,0:08:46.160 about lessons that you have learned that you think would benefit them going forward 0:08:47.060,0:08:50.120 well, don't be afraid to ask 0:08:50.340,0:08:51.660 many questions there's no such thing as 0:08:51.660,0:08:53.279 a stupid question when you're starting a 0:08:53.279,0:08:55.740 career and when you get to that point 0:08:55.740,0:08:58.680 where you're employing people always 0:08:58.680,0:09:00.420 employ people that are brighter than you 0:09:00.420,0:09:03.240 who are not afraid to challenge you not 0:09:03.240,0:09:05.459 afraid to say no to you if you come up 0:09:05.459,0:09:06.810 with something that they don't think is 0:09:06.810,0:09:09.240 workable or appropriate. you don't want 0:09:09.240,0:09:11.190 to just hire somebody like a best friend 0:09:11.190,0:09:13.320 because he is the best he or she is the 0:09:13.320,0:09:15.180 best friend if all things going to do 0:09:15.180,0:09:17.310 was agree with everything you say then 0:09:17.310,0:09:18.720 they're not doing themselves any good 0:09:18.720,0:09:21.089 and they're not doing the institution 0:09:21.089,0:09:23.279 any good. I think you need to be able to 0:09:23.279,0:09:25.649 challenge every idea that comes up 0:09:25.649,0:09:28.350 whoever sponsors the idea and then to 0:09:28.350,0:09:31.399 evaluate it with great skepticism and 0:09:31.399,0:09:35.220 great passion and passion is 0:09:35.220,0:09:37.110 a word that when I used to lecture 0:09:37.110,0:09:40.019 the students I always use it a lot. 0:09:40.019,0:09:41.339 passion is something that has to be 0:09:41.339,0:09:43.529 genuine you can't create an artificial 0:09:43.529,0:09:45.930 passion about what you're doing but 0:09:45.930,0:09:48.720 it helps if you can feel awfully good 0:09:48.720,0:09:50.250 about what you've chosen to do and 0:09:50.250,0:09:52.980 let that translate into an emotion that 0:09:52.980,0:09:56.420 helps drive and guide you at the same time. 0:09:56.580,0:10:01.260 As you think about that emotion, you think about 0:10:01.460,0:10:08.340 prospective students are also out there, what is the value of Sloan to prospective students? 0:10:08.560,0:10:12.680 I think the present value of Sloan is 0:10:12.689,0:10:14.040 very much what it was when I was a 0:10:14.040,0:10:17.790 student. where it's located, I think 0:10:17.790,0:10:20.209 it's positioning, the kind of academic 0:10:20.209,0:10:22.439 rigors of its program, i think it's 0:10:22.439,0:10:24.990 wonderful having an opportunity to 0:10:24.990,0:10:27.389 access different components throughout 0:10:27.389,0:10:29.249 the university. i think is very important. 0:10:29.249,0:10:31.339 i would encourage students to do that 0:10:31.339,0:10:34.769 one of the things that meant the most to 0:10:34.769,0:10:36.749 me during my days my early days as an 0:10:36.749,0:10:38.910 alum was the time that I spent with 0:10:38.910,0:10:40.759 students and going up to campus and 0:10:40.759,0:10:42.870 meeting with them and getting to know 0:10:42.870,0:10:44.610 them and establishing a mentoring 0:10:44.610,0:10:46.769 program. I think everybody can benefit 0:10:46.769,0:10:48.959 from the mentor including the mentors 0:10:48.959,0:10:51.480 themselves and I think it's a wonderful 0:10:51.480,0:10:52.920 opportunity because that kind of 0:10:52.920,0:10:55.160 interaction. 0:10:55.160,0:10:58.060 Bernie, it is because of those activities 0:10:58.060,0:11:01.360 that you are so loved in the Sloan program. 0:11:01.360,0:11:04.500 You did all of those things years ago and 0:11:04.500,0:11:10.180 today we're trying to replicate...probably not to the same degree as you were able to do it 0:11:10.180,0:11:16.100 but I hope you realize how much you are deserving of this award 0:11:16.100,0:11:19.920 and how much the Sloan program appreciates everything you've done. 0:11:19.980,0:11:23.160 myself, as I said, you're a mentor of mine, you're a mentor to so many. 0:11:23.300,0:11:24.080 Congratulations to you! 0:11:24.080,0:11:27.160 Aaron, thank you so much really it's a 0:11:27.160,0:11:30.730 genuine honor and I'm humbled to be the 0:11:30.730,0:11:33.040 recipient of the inaugural award it 0:11:33.040,0:11:35.770 means so much to me and I thank you 0:11:35.770,0:11:38.720 and the board for this vote of confidence. 0:11:49.160,0:11:51.220 you
