0:08:28.160,0:08:35.810 not well received at Cornell at first 0:08:32.570,0:08:39.770 among some of the faculty that they 0:08:35.810,0:08:42.620 should be professors the story is that 0:09:21.260,0:09:25.730 Economics in the nation and that's 0:09:23.300,0:09:29.330 because of Martha Van Rensselaer and 0:09:25.730,0:09:32.030 flora Rhodes and they set the pace they 0:09:29.330,0:09:35.270 called the cadence for what was going on 0:09:32.030,0:09:37.880 in most of the land-grant universities 0:09:35.270,0:09:39.470 around the country who were also engaged of the American 0:15:37.910,0:15:44.930 Home Economics Association for a brief 0:15:39.860,0:15:49.250 time but as her role as a spokesperson 0:15:44.930,0:15:51.770 for home economics grows so does her 0:15:49.250,0:15:53.960 professional friendship not only with 0:15:51.770,0:15:58.190 Laura Rose who becomes her life partner 0:15:53.960,0:16:01.700 and co-director of our College of Home 0:15:58.190,0:16:05.350 Economics the two of them become close 0:16:01.700,0:16:09.200 personal friends of Eleanor Roosevelt 0:16:05.350,0:16:09.980 Eleanor Roosevelt made many trips to 0:16:09.200,0:16:12.880 Ithaca 0:16:09.980,0:16:15.470 and whenever she came she stayed with 0:16:12.880,0:16:18.530 Martha Van Rensselaer and flora Rose 0:16:15.470,0:16:23.270 I've heard stories from some of the 0:16:18.530,0:16:26.750 older alums and faculty of three of them 0:16:23.270,0:16:29.750 tooling around and some kind of hoop in 0:16:26.750,0:16:33.770 and around Ithaca but the point is that 0:16:29.750,0:16:37.010 they had access to Eleanor Roosevelt who 0:16:33.770,0:16:41.090 would come here on a yearly basis for 0:16:37.010,0:16:44.600 farm homeless and it brought thousands 0:16:41.090,0:16:49.790 of people to Ithaca to hear her went as 0:16:44.600,0:16:52.790 she was the governor's wife and as the 0:16:49.790,0:16:57.220 years went on mrs. Roosevelt was a 0:16:52.790,0:17:02.120 regular speaker at farm in-home week and 0:16:57.220,0:17:05.990 sort of interesting that as I met early 0:17:02.120,0:17:08.870 on with graduates from that era when the 0:17:05.990,0:17:11.990 clearest memories was meeting mrs. 0:17:08.870,0:17:15.010 Roosevelt and walking with her hearing 0:17:11.990,0:17:19.580 her speak and it was extraordinarily 0:17:15.010,0:17:22.160 meaningful for the students and I liked 0:17:19.580,0:17:24.020 it especially not just that she was 0:17:22.160,0:17:27.560 friends with Miss Manners here in this 0:17:24.020,0:17:30.860 rose but that students women students 0:17:27.560,0:17:36.260 saw such a strong woman to come and 0:17:30.860,0:17:40.580 speak at farm in home week miss Van 0:17:36.260,0:17:44.030 Rensselaer was quite a force and I think 0:17:40.580,0:17:47.090 it's exciting that women students and 0:17:44.030,0:17:51.490 those farmers wives came to farming home 0:17:47.090,0:17:57.170 we were also exposed to her as a very 0:17:51.490,0:17:59.120 strong woman who was not afraid to speak 0:17:57.170,0:18:03.139 out and to 0:17:59.120,0:18:07.279 seek support for them the department in 0:18:03.139,0:18:33.549 the school that was I think a positive 0:18:07.279,0:18:39.129 aspect of this finger three and then in 0:18:33.549,0:18:40.879 1932 when the building is finally opened 0:18:39.129,0:18:43.690 unfortunately 0:18:40.879,0:18:48.030 Martha Van Rensselaer has passed away 0:18:43.690,0:18:49.420 but the building is named for her 0:18:48.030,0:18:55.120
