After a brief postdoctoral position, I moved to Cornell in 1981 as an assistant professor in the Department of Poultry & Avian Sciences (Rice Hall). I conducted research on zinc metabolism in young chickens and hens and taught in the Department of Animal Science. The course focused on animal nutrition with an emphasis on cattle. Following the awarding of tenure, I (and my family) spent a 6-month sabbatical at the University of Iowa. I studied under Dr. Alan Goodridge in the Department of Biochemistry. A few years later, the Department of Poultry & Avian Sciences was closed and I was invited to join the faculty in Nutritional Sciences. Since then, I have been teaching in basic Nutrition courses in the Division and have been conducting research mostly in cell culture.
In the past several years, my research activities have been limited to literature review of topics relevant to teaching.

My current professional activities involve teaching both graduate and undergraduate students.
Very little of my activities can be categorized as extension. I would be happy and willing to assist or contribute to extension but the opportunities have not presented themselves.
Currently, I teach/co-teach several courses. My philosophy has been to engage students in a lecture format but provide quality information mostly through traditional approaches. I am open to non-traditional approaches such a "flipping" and am currently experimenting with different versions of flipping. I do have students read primary literature prior to class discussions held in class. They are required to submit answers to questions posed in class. From comments, I gather this has been somewhat successful in promoting discussion engagement.
For advising, I have an open-door policy. I welcome students to come for discussion of future plans and schedules.

I maintain one web site each for NS3310, NS3450, NS3030 and NS6310. On these sites, I archive handouts, lectures (with audio) as Power Point slides. I also provide examples of quizzes and exams. Student feed-back regarding the slide with audio (of lectures) indicates that it is greatly appreciated.
