Biography
Andrea Parrot Ph.D. is a Professor in the Department of Policy Analysis and Management at Cornell University, where she has been teaching since 1981. She teaches courses in Contemporary Issues in Women's Health, Human Sexuality, the Global Perspective on Violence Against Women, Reproductive Health Policy, and Medical Ethics. Her research interests have revolved around women's health issues, sexual assault, infertility, and cross cultural women's health and violence against women. She earned her MS at SUNY Albany, and did additional graduate work at Union College and Syracuse University; and she earned her Ph.D. from Cornell. Dr. Parrot's work has resulted in her making numerous radio and television appearances, including Face the Nation, Oprah, Larry King Live, The Christian Broadcasting Company, and Good Morning America. She has been an award winning college professor, and a consultant to the Department of Justice and numerous law enforcement agencies where she has been an expert witness on sexual assault cases. In 2000, Dr Parrot was awarded the Richard Cross award for Outstanding Contributions to Sexual Education from the Robert Wood Johnson School of Medicine. For 30 years she has also held an adjunct appointment as a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, where she has taught human sexuality to medical students. She has made hundreds of presentations on sexual assault prevention on college campuses through the country. She has also traveled to more than 35 countries doing research on human sexuality and women’s issues, and she has taught on six semesters on Semester at Sea voyages (around the world in 2001, 2012, and 2014; to Asia in the summer of 2006; to the Mediterranean in the summer of 2009; and to Scandinavia during the summer of 2014). She is also the author of many books, manuals, and articles on sexual assault. Her most recent books, co-authored with Nina Cummings, are Forsaken Females: The Global Brutalization of Women (2006) published by Rowman and Littlefield, and The Sexual Enslavement of Girls and Women Worldwide (2008) published by Praeger.
Andrea Parrot is currently researching women's issues cross culturally, in particular the impact of HIV/AIDS policies on women, women's rights, and violence against women. She is also doing research on women's rights and issues in Afghanistan.
I believe that it is becoming increasingly important to include cross cultural/international emphasis in my courses. I provide at least several lectures and readings in each course on international/cross cultural issues in every course, while one of my courses is entirely global in it’s perspective.
To help students understand the complexities of the issues in my courses in-depth, I have students in every class read at least one book of non-fiction about a person’s life to help them understand the implications of the issues we are discussing in depth.

PAM 4440 - students have 6 books to chose from representing violence against women in 6 different countries: Light in the Window (Magdeline's asylums, Ireland); Falling Leaves (Son preference & foot binding, China); Finding Me (Sexual slavery and kidnapping of women in the US); Desert Dawn (FGM, and forced marriage, Somolia); I am Malala (female literacy and violence against women under the Taliban, Pakistan)

I also provide students opportunities to participate in social justice related projects, if they wish. In 2014, these projects included b learning about and participating in fundraising projects for HIV Ugandan women living in extreme poverty, knitting squares to be sewn into afghans for girls and women who are undergoing surgery to repair obstetrical fistulae, and assisting in a literacy and feminine hygiene program (Days for Girls).

Since 2001 Andrea Parrot has been researching women’s issues and lecturing in selected countries in Europe, Central and Eastern Asia, Africa, South America, and North America. Her primary teaching responsibility is as a full professor in the Department of Policy Analysis and Management at Cornell. Additional Cornell affiliations Professor Parrot holds include Memberships in the Graduate Field of Feminist, Gender and Sexuality Studies; The Sloan Program in Health Administration; The Southeast Asian program; Faculty Fellow in the Flora Rose House, and faculty membership in the Biology and Society Program. She has taught for the Institute for Shipboard Education during the Summer 2006 semester in Asia, Summer 2009 in the Mediterranean, Summer 2014 to Scandinavia and Europe, and the Fall 2001 and Spring 2012, and 2014 semesters that circumnavigated the globe. She has also been a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the Upstate Medical University in Syracuse New York for 30 years. She is a past member of the Sexual Violence Primary Prevention Committee (SVPPC), of the New York State Department of Health, Bureau of Women's Health, Rape Crisis Program; and the New York State Coalition Against Sexual Assault in Albany, New York.
Although I have no formal extension appointment, I frequently present to varied audiences on Assisted Reproductive Technologies, Human Sexuality, and Global Violence Against Women.
