The Institute for Nutritional Sciences, Global Health, and Technology (INSiGHT) is housed within the Division of Nutritional Sciences at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. INSiGHT has a singular vision of "Applying modern technological tools to solve nutritional and global health problems". Initially inspired by the collaborative work of two Cornell faculty, Saurabh Mehta (Division of Nutritional Sciences) and David Erickson (Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering), INSiGHT aims to foster non-traditional partnerships between researchers, implementers, health workers, and policymakers to solve complex nutritional and health challenges with minimal resources.

The institute will broadly encompass the development, validation, implementation, and scale-up of any technology that has the potential to solve a global health/nutrition problem. Following is an example list of areas where the existing strengths of Cornell can be leveraged in the nutrition and global health context.

  • Application of nanotechnology and automated image processing in a global context
  • Development of physiological systems biomarkers and engineering nutrition solutions for critical care and chronic disease populations
  • Use of technology to develop and test crops with enhanced nutritive content
  • Geographic information systems technologies to identify ‘hot spots’ of disease burden to help target resources
  • Development of improved database and communications tools to enable ‘big data’ collection and analyses
  • Electronic Methods to modify behavior and improve adherence to preventive and therapeutic regimens for better health
