The Sloan Program encourages students to design their own field of emphasis. "I would found an institution where any person can find instruction in any study," Ezra Cornell declared in 1865. In the Cornell tradition, the health services administration program allows you to select courses according to your career interests. Electives are offered in a variety of areas, including managed care, women's health issues, comparative health systems, welfare policy, consumer behavior, community and facility design, finance and analytics, social policy, human resource management, entrepreneurship and management consulting. Elective course titles include Service Operations, Strategic Marketing, Financial Statement Analysis, Finance and Management of Non-Profit Organizations, Advanced Spreadsheet Modeling, Managerial Decision-Making, E-Management, Negotiations, Managerial Writing, Leading Teams, Entrepreneurship, Organizational Communication and Managed Care, and more!
Practitioner-Led Intensive Courses (PLICs):
Taught by Sloan alumni or other experts in the field, Sloan PLICs are one- and two-credit intensive courses, generally taught on a weekend day, that provide practical, hands-on, data-driven learning experiences for students. Examples of recent PLICs include Big Data in Healthcare: Getting Past the Hype and Understanding Real World applications; Alternative Payments in Healthcare: Best Practices and Biggest Pitfalls; Fundamentals of Health Facility Planning for Managers/Entrepreneurs; Long-Term Care; Lifestyle Alternatives for the Older Adult; Physician-Management Relations, Strategic Management of Change in Healthcare Organizations; Operations and Management of Senior Living and Related Facilities; and Collaborative Approaches to Quality, Safety, and Services for Patients.
