Graduate Study in Fiber Science & Apparel Design

The graduate program in Fiber Science & Apparel Design is directed toward the study of the properties, performance, and design of textiles, apparel, and fibrous structures. The program offers four degrees within two concentrations: apparel design (MA and Ph.D. programs) and fiber science (MS and Ph.D. programs).  The faculty are from both the College of Human Ecology and the College of Engineering at Cornell.

A written thesis is required for completion of all graduate degrees in Fiber Science & Apparel Design.  Candidates for the PhD require at least three years of full-time study beyond the master's degree. Candidates for the MS or MA usually complete their degree requirements within two years.

Approximately 20 students from various locations throughout the United States and abroad are currently enrolled as graduate students in the FIber Science & Apparel Design. The wide variety of these students’ interests and experiences provides a valuable, intangible resource. Students also have access to a wealth of other resources in the department, including the opportunity to attend weekly Research Seminars.

Many graduates of the program enter industrial careers in research and development, design, and product development; others find employment in higher education and government.
