FSAD students honored

Department: FSAD

Five students in Fiber Science & Apparel Design have received awards recognizing their talent and hard work this year.

Senior Jessie Fair received The Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Scholarship and Creative Activities. This award supports the pursuits foundational to sustaining the intellectual growth of SUNY institutions by recognizing consistently outstanding scholarly and creative productivity. Jessie was one of two winners selected from all Human Ecology seniors. Check out these links for more on Jessie, Cornell Tartan Scarf, CCA Award, and her Eden Award.

Constanza Ontaneda received the Cornell Tradition Senior Recognition Award, which recognizes outstanding service and leadership through work and volunteer activities. Ontaneda and her business partner were also the first runner-up in the Social Enterprise Track of the Big Ideas competition sponsored by Entrepreneurship@Cornell. She has created a luxury line of women’s clothing called Bernales & Goretti that helps support rural villages in Peru. See also her 'Fashion Against Poverty' story.

Alexandra Sonis won second prize at the 24th Annual Spring Research Forum organized by the Cornell University Research Board for her research on green composites, the topic of her honor’s thesis. Sonis also won second place in the Rice Public Speaking Contest, where she spoke about the research.

Junior Thomas Ellingham and his business partner won second place in the Finding Solutions to the Bottled Water Controversy: Concept Competition run by the Hotel School for their ideas about reducing the waste associated with bottled water.

And senior Jeanne Lynn Douglass was selected to participate in Project OR – a 48-hour-concept-to-prototype competition sponsored by Outdoor Retailer and meant to inspire innovative summer outdoor fashions.
