DEPARTMENT OF

Fiber Science & Apparel Design

Graduate

The graduate program in the Field of Textiles is directed toward the study of the properties, performance, and design of textiles, apparel, and fibrous structures. The program offers four degrees within two majors: apparel design (MA and Ph.D. programs) and fiber science (MS and Ph.D. programs).

A written thesis is required for completion of all graduate degrees in the Field of Textiles. Candidates for the PhD require at least three years of full-time study beyond the master's degree. Candidates for the MS or MA usually complete their degree requirements within two years.

The Field is applied and multidisciplinary and offers focus in either fiber science or apparel design. The graduate faculty are from both the College of Human Ecology and the College of Engineering at Cornell University.

Approximately 20 students from various locations throughout the United States and abroad are currently enrolled as graduate students in the Field of Textiles. The wide variety of these students’ interests and experiences provides a valuable, intangible resource. Students also have access to a wealth of other resources at the department, including the opportunity to attend weekly Graduate Research Seminars. Many graduates of the program enter industrial careers in research and development, design, and product development; others find employment in higher education and government.
