Biographical Statement:
My professional focus is on research-policy-practice in family development with vulnerable families. I direct the Cornell Family Development Credential (FDC) system based on Bronfenbrenner et al's Family Matters research, and developed in collaboration with state agencies. I am currently completing a study of the role of a relationship with a credentialed worker in the lives of urban and rural families attempting to overcome the barriers of poverty.

Twenty states and the District of Columbia have developed statewide family worker training and credentialing systems based on Cornell's Empowerment Skills for Family Workers curriculum, FDC protocol, and Cornell's consultation.

Courses Taught:

Co-taught the following FDC-related technical trainings:

  • March, June and November FDC Instructor's and Portfolio Advisor's Training Institutes
  • April, June, and October 2008 FDC Instructor's and Portfolio Advisor's Update Meetings
  • 1st Cornell FDC State Affiliate (Coordinator) Orientation and Training Meeting (March 2008)

Current Professional Activities:
Director, Cornell Family Development Credential Program (FDC).

"Meaning and Significance of Mother-FDC Coach Relationships, To Mothers Overcoming Barriers" Research sites include NYC and an upstate NY region.

Current Extension Activities:
Program leadership for Cornell Family Development Credential (FDC) program which emerged from Cornell research (parental empowerment; Bronfenbrenner's bioecological theory). FDC has been adapted through affiliation agreements in twenty states.

Train and lead agency-based instructors who have trained 10,635 credentialed life coaches ("family workers") to help families set and reach their own goals for increased self-reliance within their own communities. These coaches and instructors remain employed by Cornell Cooperative Extension, county community action agencies, community colleges, public health departments, NYSEG, police departments, Head Start, and other organizations.
