About the ProgramDuring the spring legislative session, student interns function as legislative support staff in the office of a New York State Senator or Assembly Member. Interns are given meaningful tasks and assignments by senior legislative staff members who are supportive of the educational goals of the program, and who are eager to work with the recognized high-caliber students from Cornell. Although there is no typical day in the Capital Semester program, examples of assignments include:
Cornell students work for a Member of the Assembly or, with special permission from Professor Canfield, a State Senator. The application process is flexible, affording students the ability to work for a legislator with shared policy interests, such as:
In concert with their legislative work, students take two courses—one offered through the state intern program and one small seminar lead by Professor Canfield.
