Senate

With approval from Professor Canfield, students may apply to work with a New York State Senator. Senate offices are generally larger than their Assembly counterparts, offering interns a greater variety of assignments. The Senate program features a formal five day per week internship plus a weekly seminar. Through these seminars students author a piece of original legislation in preparation for a full-day mock legislative session, allowing students to explore the entire legislative process including the committee process, running for leadership positions, and oral and written advocacy. The Senate internship begins with a week long orientation in early January. Many students can opt to continue with their office as a summer employee. Otherwise, students typically leave Albany in April.
