PhD
The multi-disciplinary faculty in the Department of Policy Analysis and Management (PAM) work with graduate students in the inter-discplinary PAM Ph.D. program, and with graduate students in the Ph.D. programs in Economics, Sociology, Human Development and other graduate fields. The PAM Ph.D. program combines a focus on the substantive areas of consumer policy, family/social welfare policy and health policy with graduate level training in a social science discipline, empirical research methods, and an understanding of how multiple social science disciplines approach public policy research. The department's strong affiliation with the Cornell Population Program (CPP) serves as an additional resource. The Graduate Field of PAM consists of more than 30 faculty members trained in economics, sociology, and other fields. The PAM faculty's particular strengths include family demographic research, health economics, and other applications of social science research to domestic policy issues in the U.S. The faculty specialize in research topics such as aging and disability, consumer protection regulation, the economics of health behaviors, health care markets, health insurance, law and economics, and welfare reform and the well-being of children and families. The program of study is designed to train for research careers as faculty in public policy programs, public health programs, and other academic programs, and for non-academic research careers in think tanks, private consulting, government, or the not-for-profit sector.
