Relevant Websites
This practical online guide was developed by the Program on Breast Cancer and Environmental Risk Factors at Cornell University.  Healthy Start Partnership members will benefit from the information on environmental interventions for preventing obesity at the community level.  The guide provides step-by-step guidance on research based approaches that include planning, implementing and evaluating, as well as tools, case studies and references.

On the site, a personalized “MyPyramid Plan for Moms” can be created by users.  A pregnant woman enters her age, height, pre-pregnancy weight, physical activity level, and due date.  A breastfeeding woman enters similar information and the baby’s birth date.  Breastfeeding women will also select if they are feeding their baby breast milk only or are supplementing with formula.  The resulting Plan shows what and how much to eat from each food group during each trimester or breastfeeding stage.  It can be viewed on-screen or downloaded as a full-color printout.

Additional information on the following topics is also included on the site:

  • New York State Labor Law on Breastfeeding (2007)
    • Provides that an employee shall have the right to express breast milk at work; requires employer to make reasonable efforts to provide a location for a woman to express milk in privacy; prohibits discrimination.
    • Cornell University created a Lactation Policy (Full text PDF) in response to the new law.  The new policy was featured in a Cornell Chronicle article on January 22, 2008.

  • CDC Division of Nutrition, Physical Activity and Obesity
    • An excellent resource for health and nutrition professionals including a brochure on using fruit and vegetables to manage weight as well as a brochure on portion control for weight management.  Under physical activity, there is information on walking and trails.

  • Breastfeeding and Maternal and Infant Outcomes in Developed Countries
