Global Health



Requirements

 
 

Students tailor their own program of study based on their areas of interest in global health and the specific requirements of the minor. Sample programs of study might include:

  • Global Health and Social Inequality
  • Global Health and the Environment
  • Global Health and Ethics

REQUIREMENTS TO COMPLETE THE MINOR:

  • Total of 15 credits
  • Three core courses & two electives distributed across departments; all courses used to fulfill the minor requirements must be taken for a letter grade
  • Approved eight-week field experience abroad; for approval, students must meet in person with the Global Health Program Coordinator and submit a field experience proposal at least four weeks prior to departure
  • Ideal order: NS 2600 > core and elective courses > field experience abroad > NS 4600

Required Core Courses:

NS 2600 - Introduction to Global Health

Students will choose ONE of the following courses:

    • NS 3060 - Nutritional Problems of Developing Nations
    • NS 4450/AEM 4450 - Food Policy for Developing Nations
    • NS 4550/GOVT 4550 - Actors & Interests in Global Health (only offered in Washington, DC)
    • ENTOM 2100 – Plagues and People
    • ANTHR 2468 – Medicine, Culture and Society
    • ANTHR 3682 - Healing & Medicine in Africa 
    • AEM 2000 – Contemporary Controversies in the Global Economy
    • B&SOC 2051/S&TS 2051 – Ethical Issues in Health and Medicine 
The following HE core courses are available as part of the Urban Semester Program in New York City:
    • HE 4900 - Multicultural Practice
    • HE 4950 – Culture, Medicine and Professional Practice in a Diverse World: New York
    • HE 4060- Fieldwork in Diversity and Professional Practice: The Culture of Medicine and Public Health

NS 4600 - Explorations in Global Health (Prereqs: NS 2600, core class, electives, overseas experience)
