DEPARTMENT OF

Design and Environmental Analysis

The Department of Design and Environmental Analysis awards a Bachelor of Science in three specialties: Interior Design, Facilities Planning and Management, and Human Factors and Ergonomics. The specialties share a common commitment to improving the quality and performance of the environmental settings in which we lead our daily lives.

The DEA undergraduate curricula are designed so that all students initially take courses representing all of the options in the department, not just the option they have selected. (That's done because while there are distinctly different options within DEA, they all are related and draw on one another.) That is what makes the DEA major and its options so unique and interesting. Students in their second year and beyond take more specialized courses in their option, with the benefit of a broader-based foundation that continues to inform their more advanced studies. Outstanding students may also have the opportunity to earn a Masters degree with one further year of study. Students work with their faculty advisors to select specific courses from the suggested schedules.

With only 100+ undergraduate students and fourteen faculty in the department, DEA students benefit from regular one-on-one contact with professors. At the same time, they take advantage of all that Cornell, the largest school in the Ivy League, offers its students, including a wide range of opportunities for off-campus study.
