The Facility Planning and Management (FPM) option is recognized by the International Facility Management Association (IFMA) and accredited as a first professional degree program. It was launched in 1980 and was the first university program of its kind in the world. It draws on knowledge and methods from the fields of planning, design, real estate, business, and environmental psychology and organizational behavior.

The FPM option prepares students to enter professional practice as facility planners and workplace strategists in consulting and real estate firms and large organizations. In these positions, students' work includes strategic space planning; project management; computer-aided FM; workspace analysis; change management; space forecasting, and evaluation of workspace strategies.
