About UsThe Bronfenbrenner Life Course Center is an outgrowth of the Life Course Institute, created by the College of Human Ecology in 1992. This university initiative was a response to major demographic and social changes in U.S. society, and the need to marshall social science faculty in ways consistent with Cornell’s responsibilities as a land-grant and a research university. Recognizing the contributions of Urie Bronfenbrenner, Jacob Gould Schurman Professor Emeritus, internationally known for his contributions to the ecology of human development, and whose work and wide interests transcend disciplinary boundaries, the Cornell University Naming Committee gave permission in 1993 to rename the Institute the Bronfenbrenner Life Course Center in his honor. The creation of the Center continued the Cornell tradition of combining theory with practice and linking research with policy development.
