Student OrganizationsHuman Ecology students participate in a large number of student organizations sponsored by the college. These groups provide valuable opportunities for leadership, teamwork, creativity, cultural enrichment, community service, career exploration, and friendship outside the classroom. Successful participation in an organization allows students to be more competitive in the job market or during the application process for graduate or professional schools. Human Ecology Ambassadors: selected through an application and interview process to serve as liaisons between the College, prospective students and their families. Provide a student voice in the admissions process and support recruitment and yield activities for each incoming freshman and transfer class. Association for Students of Color (ASC): unites Human Ecology students of color to provide a supportive foundation for their enrollment, retention, graduation, and career placement. Participate in on-campus hosting programs, perform high school visitations, and sponsor alumni career forums. Provide volunteer services to the Cornell and Ithaca communities and host annual fall and spring events. Cornell Design League (CDL): allows students interested in apparel the opportunity to express their creativity outside the classroom by producing a fashion show every spring concerned with all aspects of professional presentation. Provides a creative outlet for those interested in graphics, photography, illustration, or theater production. Welcomes people from all majors and schools. Glamour Gals: dedicated to helping older women in nursing homes bolster their self-esteem and combat loneliness by connecting them with women of a younger generation. Friendships are developed through bi-monthly visits where the students provide the older women with facials, makeovers and, most importantly, company. Health and Nutritional Undergraduate Society (Health Nuts): an undergraduate service organization supporting health, nutrition, and wellness both on the Cornell campus and in the Ithaca community. Publish a campus-wide newsletter about health and nutrition, hold several fundraisers to benefit organizations such as a local soup kitchen, and donate food to an after-school tutoring program. Provides the opportunity for students to interact with the academic community by organizing Faculty-Student Coffee hours and collaborating with other health-oriented student groups. Human Ecology Research Association (HERA): dedicated to increasing awareness and participation in undergraduate research. Helps students build faculty relationships. International Facility Managers Association (IFMA): helps students interested in the field of facility planning and management explore the profession and stay current with the latest issues in the field. Sponsors speaker events, field trips, and joint meetings with other professional association chapters. Kappa Omicron Nu (KON): Human Ecology’s honor society recognizes academic excellence. Focuses on empowering leaders through scholarship, research, and leadership development. The Leadership Action Committee: strives to be of service to Human Ecology students and organizations through various methods of leadership support, including panels, workshops, and one-on-one sessions. Provides a forum for resource exchange and referral, support, socializing, and special projects depending on student interest. Orientation Committee: recruits, trains, and supervises student orientation staff members in support of new students. Plan recruitment and conduct training during fall and spring semesters. Human Ecology Peer Partnership Program: created to help incoming students of color ease transition to the college and university. Small groups of freshman and transfers, usually about 6-8 students, are partnered with faculty and upper class students. Pre-Law Undergraduate Society (PLUS): provides information to students interested in attending law school. Receive information through guest lectures, panel discussions, and programs on applying to law school, preparing for a legal education, and exploring careers. Open to the campus community. Programs include academic advising; guest speakers; career options; information on medical school admissions, MCAT preparation, research, internships; and a visit to a local medical school. Project Sunshine: provides emotional support for children with serious illnesses or disabilities and their families. Participate in events with the Franziska Racker Center, Crouse Hospital, and Upstate Medical Center and parent support groups. Make craft kits, cards, and surgery dolls with children in local schools to send to hospitalized children. Promotes interaction among the students, alumni, faculty and the other professional schools on the Cornell campus interested in health management.
