Leadership Initiatives: The Certificate and More

The Leadership Initiative (LI) builds on Human Ecology’s programs, courses, majors and traditions. Over the course of two years, LI students complete a challenging set of courses and activities to earn a certificate (with transcript notation) signifying honors in leadership and extraordinary leadership skills.

Leadership Program Goals:

  1. Provide a transformative experience with a curriculum that links scholarship and theory with the practice and development of skills
  2. Develop creative problem solving skills and foster collaboration to address important social issues
  3. Strengthen communication skills and students’ resolve to use these skills to create more effective team process and collaboration
  4. Support students’ awareness of their own strengths and gaps, priorities and passions, as they find focus and purpose
  5. Inspire and model ethical leadership
  6. Encourage students to work together across race, culture, gender and generations to hone collaborative and team-building skill

The LI is open to students in all Human Ecology majors and may be designed around requirements of those majors. Many students will complete aspects of the leadership program without completing the entire certificate. To explore this option first take HE 301 Collaborative Leadership, recommended for sophomores and juniors.  To see all certificate requirements go to HE 301 Collaborative Leadership curriculum.

Students who are interested in learning about leadership but do not have the flexibility to take a course should try LeaderShape®.  http://www.engr.cornell.edu/student-services/learning/leadershape/about-leadershape.cfm
