Students can make an appointment to meet with a career counselor in the Office of Student and Career Development, 172 MVR. Hours are Monday-Thursday 9:00 am – 4:30 pm; Friday 9:00 am – 4:00 pm in MVR 172. Stop in or call (607) 255-2988.

Counselors help students understand the connection between their academic life and personal career goals, and assist them in identifying valuable resources. It is most helpful to speak with a counselor early in one’s academic career.

Career counselors also help students prepare for graduate or professional school; develop resumes, cover letters, and personal statements; search for experiential learning opportunities, including externships and internships; and develop job search strategies, such as job interviewing and marketing a Human Ecology education to employers.

Your Education; Your Career

Questions about courses or academic performance encourage you to examine how your Cornell academic experience relates to the world of work. Typical questions that a career counselor can assist you with include:

  • What major should I pursue?
  • What kind of courses should I take?
  • What are the requirements for a pre-med curriculum?
  • I think I want to go to law school. Are there requirements for the pre-law curriculum?
  • What sorts of careers are possible with my major?
  • How do I decide if one career is better than another for me?
  • How do I get experience in the career I’m considering?
  • How do I write a personal essay for graduate school applications?
  • How do I write a resume?
  • How do I conduct a job search that will help me land an internship or full-time job?
  • How do I use networking to reach the career goals I’ve set for myself?
  • How can I practice interviewing?
