Test your interest in pursuing a career through such opportunities as internships, off-campus study, and independent research. What you learn from direct experience may differ greatly from what you learn in the classroom, expand your network, and help you plan your job search.

To explore the many programs available, browse the resources in the Career Development Center library, 162 MVR.

After you narrow your search, you should make an appointment to speak with a counselor in the Admissions, Student, and Career Development Office, 172 MVR to discuss your interests and Human Ecology’s procedures. Call (607) 255-2988 for appointments or more information.

  • Off-campus study Human Ecology students have the flexibility to spend an academic semester off campus, broadening their horizons and earning credits. They can still graduate on time, but they should meet with their faculty advisors and counselors early in their academic careers to plan their schedules thoughtfully. Off-campus experiences provide rich cultural immersions. Some programs also offer quality internships for academic credit.
  • Career-related internships and summer jobs provide an important way to explore your interests. They also give you a competitive edge in the job market. 80-90% of internships and summer jobs are never posted. The most effective way to secure these opportunities is through networking. You can also visit the Career Development Library in 162 MVR for resources such as the Internship Bible.
Internship workshops are provided by Human Ecology’s office of career development and Cornell Career Services. Check for postings in Communecology, on the Cornell Career Services calendar, and through organizational listservs. In addition, student organizations (link to internal page - where?) in Human Ecology such as PATCH for those interested in medicine and health, and PLUS for prelaw students, offer internship workshops specific to these careers. For more information, call the Human Ecology’s Career Development Office at (607) 255-2988.
  • Undergraduate Research offers opportunities for students to establish valuable connections with faculty and become involved in the implementation of their academic studies.
