Visiting the College

Human Ecology is a thriving intellectual community in a beautiful, natural setting. To fully appreciate the possibilities the college offers, we invite you to visit. See a campus bounded by gorges, with nature preserves, a lake, and six waterfalls within walking distance – and experience what the brochures can only hint at.

A campus visit will help you determine if Cornell University and the College of Human Ecology is a good match for you and your academic and personal goals. Also, we have found that campus visits and attendance at a Human Ecology information session often help applicants more clearly articulate their interest in our programs, which is an important part of the application process.

We encourage students to carefully plan their visit to ensure that they are able to take advantage of all of the programs and sessions that interest them. During your time on campus take a campus tour, attend a Human Ecology Information Session, visit classes and stay overnight with a student host.

Human Ecology information sessions are geared towards the first-year application process. Our admissions counselors discuss the mission of the college, its programs and opportunities, how Human Ecology fits within the context of Cornell University and the world, and the admissions and selection process in depth. Current students are often available at these sessions during fall semester.

Personal interviews are not offered to prospective first-year applicants. We do encourage prospective transfer applicants to make an appointment with an admissions counselor well in advance of submitting an application to discuss your interests and our required preparatory coursework (PDF). No same day appointments are scheduled.

Please do not contact our faculty members to schedule an appointment during the admissions process. The Admissions Office is the best place to obtain program/major and admissions information.

When planning a campus visit be sure to

  • think about what you want to accomplish during your stay so you can plan an efficient visit.
  • check the Cornell Admissions website and publications for campus tour and information session schedules.
  • contact our office to let us know that you plan to attend an information session (not required, although appreciated) or to make a transfer appointment (required).
  • contact the Red Carpet Society well in advance (at least two weeks) if you want to be hosted overnight.
  • be mindful of student vacations (winter and summer) and study or finals weeks.
  • review our website and materials ahead of time. This will help you generate questions to ask during your visit and be an active and engaged participant in our information sessions.

To arrange a visit or contact us with questions, please call (607) 255-5471 or e-mail us. We look forward to hearing from you.
