Curriculum Vitae
Biographical Statement:

Professor Jintu Fan has education and research experience in all major continents, including America, Asia, Africa and Europe. Prior to joining Cornell in 2012, Professor Fan was at Hong Kong Polytechnic University for over 15 years, working at different levels from Assistant Professor to Professor & Associate Head of Institute of Textiles and Clothing (ITC). Prior to PolyU, Professor Fan was Project Manager at South Africa’s Council for Scientific & Industrial Research and, before that, worked and studied at UK from 1986 to 1992.

Professor Fan is internationally renowned for his work in fiber science and apparel engineering. He holds a PhD in clothing comfort from The University of Leeds (1989) and a BSc in textile engineering from Donghua University (1985). Professor Fan's research is focused on improving the understanding of the interaction between human body, clothing and environment, and on that basis, developing fibrous materials and clothing with enhanced functional performance and aesthetic appearance. His work is multi-disciplinary involving instrumentation, computational modeling, biomimetics, nanotechnology as well as psychology. As PI/Co-PI, he has won totally US$10M competitive research grants which include US$3M from US Department of Energy through its ARPA-E program, HK$25.4M from Hong Kong Innovation & Technology Fund and HK$7.1M from Hong Kong Research Grant Council’s General Research Fund.  He has published over 200 refereed journal papers, many of which appeared in leading journals of relevant fields, including Nano Letters, Advanced Materials, Soft Matters, Langmuir, Proceedings of Royal Society of London-Biological Sciences, International Journal of Heat and Mass Transfer and Textile Research Journal. He has also published 4 research monographs/edited books and contributed about 25 book chapters. In addition, he has 13 granted/pending patents.

Through novel experimentation and theoretically modeling, Professor Fan and his co-workers have made seminal contribution towards the understanding of the complex heat and mass transport phenomena in nano- and micro-fibrous materials, which is fundamental to the engineering of fibrous materials for various applications, including insulation for buildings and spacecrafts, filters, fiber composites, fuel cell’s gas diffusion layers, tissue scaffolds, geotextiles as well as functional clothing.

Professor Fan’s invention of sweating fabric manikin-Walter was the biggest breakthrough in manikin technology over 20 years, and made headline news in scientific magazines and international media, including New Scientist, Scientific American, CNN, ABC, BBC, Reuters, Agence France Press, Xinhua News Agency, German Radio and Japan Radio. So far eight units of such sweating manikins have been installed in institutions around the world.

Professor Fan’s pioneering work of using 3D scanned body images for studying bodily attractiveness has an influential impact on evolutionary psychology. His discovery of VHI (body volume divided by the square of height) being the dominant factor of bodily attractiveness is widely reported by numerous media including Nature News. This work was invited for exhibition in two German Museums on the occasion of the 200th birthday of Charles Darwin.

For his outstanding contribution, Professor Fan has been honored by a number of prestigious awards, including the Warner Memorial Medal from the worldwide Textile Institute for outstanding work in textile science, Doctor of Science from Leeds University in 2011, Honorary Fellow of Textile Institute in 2010 (The highest honor of the worldwide Textile Institute for creativity and advancement of knowledge; only 61 recipients so far since its first award in 1928), Gold Medal Award from 32nd International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva in 2004, Distinguished Achievement Award from the US Fiber Society in 2003, and President’s Award for Outstanding performance/achievement in research from Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 2001.

Professor Fan has been a visiting/adjunct/guest professor at universities around the world, including University of Sydney in Australia, Shinshu University in Japan, Technical University of Liberec in Czech Republic, and 9 universities in China.
